Group Therapy
What are the benefits of group psychotherapy?
It is the support and shared experience of your peers as well as those of a professional that make group therapy completely different from any other method of delivering treatment.
In the event that you have experienced relationship difficulties, and/or your life has been affected by loss or trauma, group therapy serves as a valuable opportunity for you to connect with others experiencing the same issues.
Group therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not and can act as a support network and a sounding board.
Who might benefit?
Here’s how group therapy can help:
Groups offer support. When we hear from others suffering from similar issues, we realise that we are not alone with our struggles and that can provide a sense of relief.
Groups as a sounding board. The experience of hearing the perspectives of group members can help us achieve a broader understanding of our situation and thus be better able to deal with it.
Groups can moves us forwards. Groups members help each other find solutions to challenges and hold each other accountable. Hearing how other members overcome their obstacles may motivate us to push ourselves further.
Groups promote social skills. Not only do groups ease isolation, but they also provide us with the opportunity to practice re-engaging with people, demonstrating our ability to work with others.
Groups teach us about ourselves. As each person holds up a mirror, we are able to view ourselves through their eyes. As a result, we are able to identify the blind spots that may be preventing us from overcoming our challenges.
How does it work?
The groups I run are time-limited and topic-focussed.
Whatever is foremost on your mind is brought to the session and this will usually be a combination of your feelings, thoughts, memories and dreams.
As the relationship with the therapist develops you may discover new insights and more appropriate ways of self-regulating your emotions and managing your behaviours.
Sessions are held weekly and are regular and frequent so as to give as much continuity and support as possible.
